New list of high-risk pests is available

Researchers at Aarhus University have prepared a list of the organisms that pose the greatest risk to Danish greenhouse crops.

Viruses, fungi, arthropods and nematodes can in each their own way damage potted plants, fruits and vegetables in Danish greenhouses - but how great is the risk of each species? Researchers from Aarhus University have prepared a detailed list at the request of the Danish Agricultural Agency.

As a starting point, Senior Researcher Gabor Lövei and postdoc Marco Ferrante from the Department of Agroecology used the extensive list of species that can be found on the official European lists of quarantine pests, namely the EU Plant Health Directive and EPPO Alert List. On the basis of these, the researchers prepared a detailed report containing information about the risk levels of specific species that are relevant for Denmark. 

When evaluating the risk level of each species, the researchers took several factors into consideration, including the risk that the species would establish itself and spread in Denmark, and how potentially harmful the species could be for Denmark. All the risk elements were combined and weighted by uncertainty factors.

At the end of the report is an overview of the 35 species that pose a very high risk for Danish greenhouse crops. In this group there are 2 bacteria, 19 arthropods, 7 fungi, 4 nematodes and 3 viruses. For these 35 high-risk species, the report provides a brief description of host plants, geographical distribution, quarantine status, means of spread and economical significance as well as a justification for its risk score.

The report was prepared at the request of the Danish Agricultural Agency in connection with the agreement between Aarhus University and DCA – Danish Centre for Food and Agriculture regarding policy support. You can see the complete report here
