Soil Quality

Soil quality is ‘fitness for purpose’.  Our research area addresses a societal purpose of sustaining the continued high level of plant productivity with minimal environmental impacts.  We therefore focus our research on enhancing the understanding of basic soil processes and identifying the impacts of management procedures on soil quality.

Of particular interest to us are three identified threats to sustained soil quality:

  • critical low contents of organic matter
  • soil compaction
  • soil erosion

Much of the knowledge we create is is included in web-based tools for decision-making by farmers, stakeholders and public authorities. These tools include digitized maps on vulnerability for a given threat as well as interactive decision support tools for use at the field scale.
