PhD Defence: Microbial ecology of denitrifying woodchip bioreactors, a step towards microbial management
During his PhD studies, Arnaud Jéglot researched the microbes responsible for denitrification in woodchip bioreactors at low temperature.
These bioreactors are installed to remove nitrate from agricultural drainage water, but have low efficiency during the winter season. Therefore, it is paramount to enhance the nitrate removal when temperature is low to protect the natural aquatic ecosystems from receiving nitrogen-contaminated water.
The new research findings document the versatile microbial composition of woodchip bioreactors based on molecular analyses and contribute to the understanding of these ecosystems. Studies with enrichment and isolated cultures of cold-adapted denitrifying bacteria aimed at future implementation of microbial management to improve the drainage water treatment in woodchip bioreactors under low temperature conditions.
The PhD study was completed at the Department of Agroecology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
