New professor of plant pathology at Aarhus University

Mogens Støvring Hovmøller has been appointed professor of plant pathology in the Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University.

Aarhus University has appointed Mogens Støvring Hovmøller as professor of plant pathology at the Department of Agroecology with effect from 1 March 2019. He has been a professor with special responsibilities (MSO) since 2011, but now the university has set up a new permanent position within the area.

In his research, Mogens Støvring Hovmøller has a strong focus on pathogenic fungi affecting agricultural crops. Rust fungi on cereals and grasses is a main current topic, which has impact on food security in many areas in Africa and Asia, but also impacts agricultural productivity in Europe, including organic crop production. One of his special responsibilities has been to develop and lead the Global Rust Reference Center (GRRC), which is hosted by Aarhus University in, Flakkebjerg, located on the western part of the island of Zealand. GRRC has an international reputation as a leading hub for research in epidemiology and population biology of wheat rust fungi, attracting funding from multiple national and international institutes and foundations. 

Mogens Støvring Hovmøller earned his master degree (cand. agro.) from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in 1985 and earned his PhD from the same university six years later. His career has followed a straight path from research assistant and senior researcher at the Danish Institute of Plant and Soil Science to his  appointment as professor mso at Aarhus University.  

Mogens Støvring Hovmøller is well known within the international wheat rust and plant breeding community. He has an extensive international network and has held more than 100 presentations at scientific congresses and meetings. Besides authoring more than 150 scientific publications, he has been involved in organising international meetings and reviewing articles for leading international scientific journals.
