Crop Genetics and Biotechnology

Basic introduction to section

The research of Section for Crop Genetics and Biotechnology (CGB) advances sustainable crop production and the plant-based food agenda through cutting-edge genetics, seed science, molecular biology and biotechnology, supporting Danish strategic goals of green transition, innovation, and internationalisation.

Through our research we:

  • take an interdisciplinary approach, combining classical plant breeding with modern molecular tools such as genome editing, DNA markers, bioinformatics, and functional genetics and genetic resources.
  • pioneer in applying New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) in crops.
  • focuses on enhancing the genetic potential of crops for yield, quality, disease resistance, and climate resilience.

The section features

  • a robust infrastructure that supports seed science and molecular studies on crops, including classified laboratories.
  • classified greenhouses, growth chambers, semi-field growth facilities, and outdoor growth tunnels.
  • a central role in policy support tasks, particularly around GMOs and NGT regulations at national and EU levels.
